downsizing tiny home

One of the biggest concerns for people that decide to embark in the adventure of going tiny is getting rid of their belongings. When you consider that according to an article by the LA Times, the average US household has approximately 300,000 possessions, paring down your possessions can be the hardest step to take when going tiny.

Keep reading, we want to give you some tips to get ready for this move!

Organize First

Organizing should be the first step when downsizing your home. It will be easier for you to tackle chunks of work rather than trying to do your entire home all at once. Start with kitchen items, then move over to the living area, bedrooms, restrooms, etc. You will be far more productive if you take it step by step. Organization in the process will be key!

Be Realistic

Your tiny home will be TINY! So, it is very important to be realistic when getting ready to move. It is hard to admit to yourself that as much as you love your belongings, some of these are non-essentials.  It is important to think thoroughly what you’ll keep in your closet and what you’ll toss – be realistic and stick to the necessities that fit in your tiny home.

Donate or sell Unwanted Items

Once you have organized your belongings and you have decided what you’ll keep and what you’ll get rid off, consider organizing a garage sale or donating your unwanted items.  Most of your belongings will be in good condition and can be reused by someone in need. Here is a good list of places that accept donations!

Stop Buying Non-Essential Items

Once you’ve moved into your tiny home and you’ve managed to reduce your possessions, one very important thing to remember is to STOP buying unnecessary items. The process of simplifying your life doesn’t stop the moment you move into your tiny home. Tiny living is a lifestyle, and although it might seem difficult, it is gratifying and exciting.
